What is substantive?

Have you ever had a writing assignment in school where the teacher just gave you a piece of paper and said write a whole page on anything you want to? Me either, but creating this blog was an exciting idea until I got to the part where you start typing. Then came the idea what to write. I just had an interesting conversation with my boss who asked if we were doing anything substantive. I must admit I had to look this word up and what I found was the meaning. "having or expressing substance" so I looked up substance and found the definition, "practical importance, meaning, usefulness.

God asks us the same question in Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
